American Holidays
I worked at the grocery store, Wegmans, for 10 years - seven of them in the kosher deli, which was part of the larger regular deli. For many of my co-workers, I was the first Jewish person they knew well. There are lots of questions I expected and was happy to answer, but I was surprised to be asked if Jews celebrate Thanksgiving! Of course, we do! At least most of us do. There are enclaves of ultra-Orthodox Jews who keep themselves separate from the larger society around them, but most American Jews are just that - American Jews. And, yes, we celebrate Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve and the Fourth of July. Our menus may be kosher, but our celebrations are just as heartfelt. |
